Baked Apple Cider Sweet Potatoes

My family’s Thanksgiving table would not be complete without marshmallow topped sweet potatoes. I am not a fan or marshmallows myself… not any more. I loved them as a kid, but they are mysteriously white, puffy, sugar and calories. But, the majority of my family wins and they top my sweet potatoes each year. These are Whole Foods 365 brand marshmallows, sold in small batches, without a scary ingredient list. So, that’s what I went with to top…
Local New Jersey sweet potatoes. That’s right. Thanksgiving in New Jersey meant locally grown sweet potatoes (found at Whole Foods Millburn, the BEST Whole Foods I’ve seen), blended with local upstate NY apple cider. Yum.
It’s easy. Boil your yams (I had approximately 3 pounds), peel them when cool to touch, and put them in your stand mixer. Start with the paddle attachment on low and slowly increase the speed to 4 or so. Then, remove the paddle attachment, but don’t scrape it because it should be covered with thin hair-like fibers that are not pleasant in the mouth.
Switch to the whisk attachment, add 1 cup or so of apple cider, and slowly increase the speed until it is on high. Whip them a little, and transfer them to a baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes or so. Top with marshmallows at the end and bake another few minutes until golden brown.
Enjoy!
Holiday Gifts for my Foodie Family and Friends

This holiday season has been the easiest shopping season ever. I made 3 stops: Liquor Mart, Whole Foods, and Savory Spice Shop.
Liquor Mart is the place to go in Boulder to buy ROOT, which I picked up for my dad and experimented with some amateur mixologists (aka family and friends) in my parents’ basement bar. Order some online if you’re not here in Boulder.
Whole Foods is the local place to buy Chocolove bars. Again, order online and treat yourself to some fantastically created chocolate flavor sensations. I gave away a dozen Chocolove bars to smiling faces in New Jersey.
Finally, I went to Savory Spice Shop for some standard herbs like oregano and parsley, but I also picked up some Korean Aged Black Garlic, some Lavender Vanilla Bean Sugar, and some Spiced Vanilla Bean sugar, which I sprinkled over my apple pie for Thanksgiving. Savory Spice Shop makes beautiful holiday gift baskets, so stop in the shop or order online and make all of your foodie friends happy this holiday season.

I can’t believe I have no self control. Zero self control. One large bag of Olomomo Righteous Cinnamom Cayenne Roasted Almonds was totally devoured by two people (me included) in what I’m remembering to be less than 30 minutes.
They are seriously good nuts!
Scarpetta Wine

As the label says, “Scarpetta is a collaborative effort of Master Sommelier Bobby Stuckey and Chef Lachlan Patterson of Frasca Food and Wine.”
Scarpetta wine. What a great idea, and for anyone familiar with Frasca Food and Wine and Chef Lachlan Patterson, it is no surpirse. There seems to be no shortage of good ideas these days.
As an avid wine drinker (consumer perhaps might be a better word?), I was pleased to receive this bottle of Friuli Italian wine from the illustrious folks at Frasca here in Boulder. I do not pretend to be a wine expert, though I do personally consume a lot of wine. I like to say that I know what tastes good. If I don’t notice the hint of strawberry or the tobacco (or whatever else might be hiding in the bottle), I can at least tell you if I’d have another glass… or another bottle.
If I had no restraint I’d be on scarpettawine.com buying a case right now. It really was that good. I suggest if you’re interested in wines you check out Scarpetta and let me know what you think.
Enjoy responsibly, of course.
